Job Summary:
The rapidly spreading COVID-19 pandemic imposed new challenged on the already strained health system in Afghanistan. The country faces many hurdles in coping with the COVID-19 response due to prolonged armed conflict, lack of social protection, limited resources, limited healthcare capacity, and insufficient preparedness and coordination mechanisms. To address this, there is an urgent need for enhanced multi-sectoral preparedness, operational readiness and response capacity in order to minimize spread of COVID-19 and mitigate its short and long-term effects. WHO through funding from EU and its own contribution will implemented a three-year project to mitigating the health effects of Covid-19 pandemics in Afghanistan; prevent new infections, slowing down transmission, and reducing morbidity and mortality associated with Covid-19. The project is aligned with ONE UN Covid-19 response plan, EU support framework for fighting Covid-19 pandemic and Afghanistan’s National Covid-19 response plan. The project will primarily focus on increasing diagnostic capacity, enhancing surveillance system, improving case management, infection prevention and nutritional support to COVID-19 patients.
Purpose of the Post:
The incumbent will work at (Covid-19 testing laboratory) in one of the above 12 provinces and will mainly carry out laboratory testing for Covid-19 using RT-PCR techniques or other methods if required. H/She will report test results, ensure quality control and ensure proper maintenance of lab equipment. If needed the H/She will also conduct routine laboratory tests in clinical areas such as chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, bacteriology, serology, parasitology, and blood banking to provide data for use in the treatment and diagnoses of patients seeking care at provincial hospital.
Objectives of the Programme and the immediate Strategic Objective (Overview of the programme):
The mission of WHO’s Program is to help countries, and to coordinate international action, when needed, in order to prevent, prepare for, detect, rapidly respond to, and recover from outbreaks and other public health emergencies as part of COVID-19 EMERGENCY Response and Health Systems Preparedness Project. World Health Organization is supporting the positions.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The incumbent will perform the following duties under the direct supervision of the head of Kunduz Regional Laboratory In-charge.
Main responsibilities:
• Receiving, processing and analyzing samples.
• Conducting tests on samples using RT-PCR and other testing methods
• Design and execute laboratory testing according to standard procedures, make observations and interpret findings
• Handling and properly storing reagents, consumables and other materials according to safety instructions
• Picking-up and delivering items for the laboratory
• Dealing with inquiries or needs from the visitors and workers
• Administrative tasks such as maintaining notebooks, documenting procedures, and preparing orders
• Calculate test results, and report results using a computer
• Maintain equipment in proper working order and maintain a clean work area
• Practice safe work habits, including complying with all safety, health, and environmental rules and regulations
• Any other task assigned by supervisor

- Proven experience as Lab Technician or relevant position
Educations:
Essential: Diploma in Medical laboratory technology attested by Ministry of Higher Education, Islamic republic of Afghanistan
Desirable Bachelor’s degree in Medical laboratory technology, attested by Ministry of Higher Education, Islamic republic of Afghanistan
Experience:
Essential: Minimum 2 years of related experience in clinical laboratory procedures.
Desirable: Working experience in Covid 19 lab preferably at national or regional level
Languages: Fluent in Dari and Pashto and workable knowledge of English.
IT Skills:
- Good knowledge of Microsoft applications.
Note:
